April 11, 2019

We keep hearing it again and again – “Do something”, “Make a Change”, ”Be the change”, “Fashion Revolution “ ,but what if we desperately do want to make the change, but don’t have the bank balance to do it ! This list is especially put together with that in mind!
It’s time to embrace sustainable fashion – helping the environment, people and animals doesn’t mean you can’t have style, and on a budget too!!

1. Start embracing the idea of second hand clothing – Countries around the world deal in second hand clothing, so there’s no need for India not to follow! It’s cheap, it’s fun and you can find really interesting unique stuff! A lot of second hand stores are NGOs as well, so your investment in these products could be channeled in a philanthropic manner – and you are ensuring it doesn’t add to that big pile of waste!

2. Clothes Swap – Start a clothes swap with your friends! We all lend or borrow clothes, so why not make it more of a habit. I’ve often looked into my friend’s wardrobes and loved some of their stuff ! Do it with a group of girls and you’ll end up having more of a variety and less need to shop! Also this will give you more girl time ! And there’s another option if your friends aren’t on the same page as you! We now have an online community that does that as well – TFT

3. Do your research – Next time you do want to make a purchase, make sure you know which sustainable stores to visit! A lot of Indian stores are now either completely sustainable or are focusing on it. I promise it won’t be ten times more expensive than the outfit you were going to purchase anyway and it will last longer! Make sure you choose timeless long lasting pieces so you know even though you are spending on it – it’s an investment! To name a few I know in India – Fair Trunk, Toile, Saahra,Eco-trunk , Good Earth and BungalowEight !

4. Don’t Throw! – We live in a country where tailors are available at every nook and corner, so instead of junking , reuse and recycle, get your creative juices going or just get the tailor to help you restyle your outfit you are bored with! Youtube is full of DIY videos as well! You’ll be surprised at what you can do at a cost effective price! If you’re really not up for that, there are plenty of charitable donation centers in India and someone will definitely be happy to receive them!

5. Take care of your clothes – We all know how many Indian cities are hot and humid so often after wearing an outfit for just an hour, we tend to throw it for a wash! What most of us fail to realize is using a lower temperature in your washing is not only less damaging to fabrics, but it’s a win for the environment too. Definitely better to hand wash, as we also have the opportunity to use the clothesline to dry our clothes! You can also try washing your clothes in larger batches, because this will waste less water and electricity. We now have eco friendly detergents in India, which will cause less harm helping all your pieces to last longer. Last but not least, the more organic and airy your fabrics are, the less you’ll sweat in them, so choose wisely!
