The first thing I noticed while checking in was the Key Card which was made of wood and the lighting in the rooms were sensor based so they switched off if not being used ! The hotel has 95% led bulbs .
From 2019 Intercontinental Fujairah has been working with a company called Winnow – a data management company and has a software which controls daily management of waste from the kitchen which ends up saving 26% of kitchen waste !
All hot water pipelines are insulated with a pot ( Polypropylene Radom Plastic) materials to reduce heat loss .
The public area washrooms have sensors which help in controlling water usage and avoids wastage . All the used water from the kitchen , laundry and guest rooms goes into STP and gets treated so it can go into watering the landscape . Not many hotels in the UAE have that facility .
I met up with the General Manager who graciously sat down with me and explained all the sustainable methods they were taking and was upfront and completely transparent that Intercontintientantal is by no means a sustainable hotel and was conscious of the fact that they have a long way to go are working towards that .
The guest rooms are double paned to reduce heat transfer from outside to inside and the aircon thermostat remains at a temperature of 24 degrees which is on eco mode ! 90% of the paper collateral in the rooms has reduced and menus and other services are all digital . The guest room bathrooms have reusable bottles so the toiletries do not need to be replaced just refilled in the same bottles and have flow reducers that control pressure and control flow to save on water pressure and usage .
The property itself is a green thumb delight as it is filled with greenery in every corner possible . UAE itself can rise upto frightening temperatures so this amount of Greenery on the property can help temper down the heat factor .They also have a small herb garden growing radish ,brinjal and other vegetables . In fact the inroom dining service comes with an agave plant for decore which has mud taken from 3 different soils from three different gardens of the property . The hotel has two green parking stations and is aiming to get more !
The resort has a really cool evening routine which they do for the guests to portray the shift from day to evening and in the evening all lights are on timers so there is no extra lighting in the resort and no wastage of electricity .
Steps to reduce operational facilities are being taken seriously apart from the key cards they use paper straws and reusable bottles . In fact the Manager shared with me that there are big plans to start their own water plant so that they can eliminate the use of purchasing water bottles all together !
Intercon Fujairah work with a recycling company to sell cardboard and paper as well as have segregation of their garbage .
On another note, the Intercon got me so pumped with their sustainable efforts that it has got me writing again !
Stay tuned for more sustainable stays and finds coming up soon !
