Japanese Gardens

March 16, 2016

My trip to Thailand , at the start of 2015, was an unbelievable adventure! Although I have visited Bangkok before, as also the legendary entertainment district Patpong, where the show that I witnessed is literally embedded in my brain, this holiday was quite different. We flew to Koh Samui which was party central, like absolute nonstop partying and nonstop music which made it impossible for us to sleep, even if we wanted to.

After a hectic 24 hours, we took a ferry to Koh Phangan for the Full Moon Party which begins at dusk every month , when the round yellow moon makes its appearance over the white sand beach and where there is something for everyone-trance, techno, reggae, drum and bass, jugglers, fire-eaters. After such a magical night, taking the ferry back in the wee hours of the morning was a completes lapse in our judgment.

Then came the real deal, my second dive spot – Kho Nanguan , a renowned snorkeling island which was a 3 hour boat ride away and a different form of paradise. My friend who had come to visit from Switzerland and I were extremely excited. We reached the island, got into our gear and I remember practically sprinting into the ocean. It’s strange how when you’re so excited, that even the oxygen tank seems completely weightless. The site was called Japanese Gardens and the visibility was perfect. The fluorescent blue waters , the vibrant corals and the unique marine life that I saw was breathtaking and a collection started coming to life in my mind, whilst on the dive. Being aware of something so beautiful and glorious made my mind go into overdrive there and then and my next collection was conceptualised.

Naturally, I named it ‘Japanese Gardens’. It was a collection of swimwear, kaftans and gowns. Each piece had a flow – an elegant and an almost floaty feel to it. Of course I had to add my touch of quirkiness to it, so there were some hoods and some layers .I was very happy with the end result and was waiting for a special occasion to showcase it. My collection came alive when I was invited by my friend to showcase at the first ever Stavanger Fashion Night in Norway which she had organized.

From warm sunny beaches and blue seas to a country encompassing mountains, glaciers and deep coastal fjords, another adventurous journey unfolded. I met so many great people, one of my best friends from the Fashion School I had studied in ended up joining us and we had a mini school reunion. The show itself was a huge success.
