Sur la Mer Hotel in Goa, India.

April 29, 2016

NKV_0291editWhen I first started supplying my clothes to multi-designer stores in India in 2010, Goa was the second destination I targeted after Mumbai. A lot of my inspiration comes from nature, and the ocean is one of its main components. Whether it was the underwater world or the changing colours with the different currents and tides, it all played a major role in the design. The first store I stocked at in Goa, is a store, which is still going strong – known as Sosas, and located in Panjim, it is known for resort, pert and cocktail wear.

Another very well-known clothing store, which has recently earned a name for itself is Nana Ki , which is in the compound of the all-famous French restaurant La Plage – at Morjim Beach. My next review is on a hotel in Morjim itself – SurlaMer.

SurlaMer is not on Morjim beach as the name suggests. It is a 5-minute walk from the beach and the main road. It’s in a small lane off the main road going towards the beach. Although the entrance doesn’t look tremendously grand, as soon as you enter the hotel you see the beauty of the pool area. The pool is huge, with many beds, hammocks and lounging chairs around it. There were quite a few things that caught my eye as soon as I entered the room. One was the attic – it had a ladder to climb and a double mattress on top. I thought it was a really charming touch that likened the room to a two bedroom suite. The bathroom was really impressive, even though it was completely exposed and by that I mean no doors, only a single curtain on both sides, with two sinks and an open shower and a pot. Anyone staying in that suite needs to be pretty comfortable with the person they are staying with. Luckily for me I was.

I was ecstatic to see the bathrobes hanging there; they are one of my favorite hotel room accessories, the toweled robes and the white cloth slippers. I feel one automatically gets into relaxation mode just by slipping into these. There was also a desk, a chair and a wooden closet. The room had a sort of rustic glam vibe to it but more than anything it was extremely cozy. My friend and I ordered the same meal for dinner – a grilled ham and cheese sandwich and French fries, simple but sometimes a light meal works well after all the spicy curries. The beds had these mosquito nets on them, which gave a nostalgic feeling of sleeping in a tent.

Just below the room, close to the poolside is the eating area, and in the evening once again, it was the most beautiful setting imaginable. With light jazz music and candles placed all over the tables and around the pool. In fact, the view of the pool from my room at night was absolutely dazzling

I would definitely recommend SurlaMer for a comfortable and relaxing stay. Efficient room service, polite staff and the proximity to the beach make it a great getaway for a weekend or even an entire week.

Morjim beach, which has now become one of the most popular and easily one of the cleaner beaches to stay by, is just a few moments away. There are of course plenty of places to dine on Morjim beach itself with every cuisine imaginable!
