SUSTAINABLE LIVING

Conscious consumer demand for sustainable and ethically sourced products isn’t showing any signs of slowing down – and for good reason too.

This was a really fun article for me to write as it opened my eyes, to what you can and cannot call sustainable home ware! I got to review a bunch of products and have listed down my favorites and the most sustainable ones.

Jewelled Buddha prides itself on each and every product being handmade by artisans, empowered by a fair and sustainable income. Their products include responsibly sourced sustainable materials, including recycled fabric. The owner Harjit sent me a throw, a cushion cover and 3 small cushion covers. These products are all woven with handcrafted techniques; mostly pit looming and each have an empowering story behind the ngo weaver! The patterns are really striking and at first glance make your room look more homely and ethical.  You can check out the other pieces they have to offer at https://www.jewelledbuddha.com

Another really cute bedroom accessory that was sent to me by the Ethical Silk Company, was a sleeping mask and a luxurious looking pillow case .The silk used known as ethical mulberry silk has an interesting process, The mulberry silk production extracts the silk from the cocoon, after the moth has left the cocoon. The result is a beautifully rich silk which, because of the particular way it is produced, is more like a fine linen with a beautiful matt luster, rather than the shiny finish of traditional silk. The Ethical Silk Company has pledged to donate 10% profits to charity. See more on https://www.theethicalsilkco.com

For my bathroom, I received a great travel set from The Humble Co from Sweden, a leading small revolution in personal care products. The great part is every humble purchase goes towards funding projects for the benefit of needy children. Their products have been conceived, designed and manufactured under the guidance and supervision of dentists. They sent me 3 of their most sold bamboo toothbrushes which have a handle made from 100% biodegradable, sustainable grown bamboo I also received a bamboo travel case and bamboo toothbrush stand! Although it was quite a switch from my regular electronic toothbrush, I loved the feel of the bristles and the sturdiness of the bamboo accessories! They are of course certified and available at https://thehumble.co/

Moving finally to the kitchen,  KeepJar from Sweden sent me the most eco-friendly, multi-usage shopping grocery bags which can be used to store fruits and veggies in at home too. They also sent me smaller versions of the bags, which can be used to store tinier items. Made from organic cotton and manufactured in India at a GOTS-certified factory, they pride themselves on hiring housewives to lessen poverty! The factory is visited regularly. The GOTS standard guarantees that the fabric is organic and that a variety of international rights for employees are met with and that no toxic, hormonal, carcinogenic or polluting chemicals are used in the production and dyeing. Independent certification bodies, which monitor and test all stages of the production chain, carry out extensive controls – the organic cotton, spinning, dyeing and imports are checked.
